Grizzly family with 4 cubs Yellowstone

This gallery is dedicated to this wonderful mother. We hope that all 4 make it to maturity. We'll be back next spring to photograph the family. Well we went back in the spring of 2011 and unfortunately there are now only 2 cubs. She came out of the den with 3, but went into Gardiner's hole in May with the 3 and came out with only two. No one knows what happened. The two remaining cubs look to be in good shape. We'll let you know in 2012 what happens. By the way the newer photos are at the end of this folder.

  • Close up of one of the kids crossing the road.
  • Another shot of the kids crossing the road.
  • I like this photo, The cubs are not visable as she rises up from the sage and grass. A very imposing lady.
  • This photo was taken shortly after the family crossed the road at Swan Lake Flats. The cubs are down in the sage. I like the photo as it gives you some idea of size, and how fortunate we were to have several reasonably close sightings. We also had several where the family even with the 840mm lens (a 600 with 1.4) were nothing but bear dots.
  • The cubs remain clustered together, close to mom, until they get away from the road.
  • This photo of the sow with one of the kids peaking from the trees was taken near Indian Creek. We met a lady who calls her "White Claw" In this photo you can see why.
  • In this photos near indian creek, you can see 3 of the 4 as well as mom.
  • Of the 4 cubs, this one is often referred to as the runt. It runs, jumps and plays like all of its siblings, it is picked on though. Mon has been seen letting this little one ride on her back when it gets tired. Unfortunately while we saw this behavior, it was beyond Africa lake and to far for photos.
  • The cubs were constantly playing (except when they cross the road), this is done in a sprint. Mom has taught them well.
  • This photo was taken just after they crossed the road. Note the rapid movement of the cubs as she prods along.
  • Another photo containg all 4 cubs. Not as good as the ones taken at Golden Gate, but neat anyway.
  • Two of the four playing on the logs near Indian Creek camp grounds.
  • Wonder what he/she is looking at. The lens used was 840mm and the photo cropped, so it wasn't us. May well have been mom.
  • This photo was taken near the indian creek campground. Note the length of the claws on this cub. A real chip off the old block.
  • This give you an idea how they negotiate the many fallen trees in the park. Up Up and Away.
  • If you look close, you can see all four cubs in this photo.
  • This is the quad mom by herself. This is the first of the 2011 photos. Unfortunately she was always on the wrong side of the road (from a light prespective)
