Grizzly family with 4 cubs Yellowstone

This gallery is dedicated to this wonderful mother. We hope that all 4 make it to maturity. We'll be back next spring to photograph the family. Well we went back in the spring of 2011 and unfortunately there are now only 2 cubs. She came out of the den with 3, but went into Gardiner's hole in May with the 3 and came out with only two. No one knows what happened. The two remaining cubs look to be in good shape. We'll let you know in 2012 what happens. By the way the newer photos are at the end of this folder.

This I believe to be the ultimate photo we (Sherry) took of the family. The photo was taken in a high wind at the Golden Gate. This is the area up from Mammouth just as you get onto the flats, The winds often concentrate here making impromptu photos difficult. This being said, I had a hard time getting the cubs to line up for her. (If you believe that I have a bridge to sell).

  • This I believe to be the ultimate photo we (Sherry) took of the family. The photo was taken in a high wind at the Golden Gate. This is the area up from Mammouth just as you get onto the flats, The winds often concentrate here making impromptu photos difficult. This being said, I had a hard time getting the cubs to line up for her. (If you believe that I have a bridge to sell).
  • The opportunity of taking the four lined up on the rock only lasted a couple of seconds. These guys are always moving. It is my belief that for every mile she wals they walk three.
  • This photo was taken at the "Golden Gate" area in YNP. This photo shows only two of the cubs. This female has 4.
  • The two cubs are peaking out at a large motor home that stopped. They are slightly above the top of the RV on the cliff at Golden Gate. This photo opportunity only lasted about two or three minutes. Sherry was making the most of her 8 frames a second.
  • Mom and two cubs at the "golden Gate".
  • More concerned now with mom then the traffic below them.
  • Kids appear to be interested in something behind them.
  • Untitled photo
  • Good shot of Mom, she is an imposing lady. Please remember that we are using telephoto lenses for these close ups.
  • This photo shows the winds that were shaking our cameras, there was not time to set up a tripod. Beginning to end this opportunity only lasted a couple of minutes. There wasn't even time for a bear jam to start. After posing she took her family back into the timber.
  • If you look closely all four cubs are in this photo. With the way they move arround, getting a photo like number one was probably once in a lifetime.
  • Neat pose.
  • They seem to have a similar interest. It might be the motor home. The vehicle stopped right under them. She appears to be a very calm bear with little interest and a lot of tolerance for humans.
  • Untitled photo
  • Note the one cub peaking out from behind Mom.
  • One cub becomes two.
  • Mom and one of the kids look out from above the Golden Gate.
  • Mom and two of the kids on Swan Lake Flats. Note the one cub standing to see above the sage. This activity was quite common.
  • Moving with a purpose across Swan lake Flats.
  • Mom has already crosssed the kids then move across in a group. Although sometimes the move across one after the other. This is not a good photo, as the light was all wrong, but it's still sort of neat. Note the runt bringing up the rear.
