African Wild Dogs

The African wild dog is a diurnal animal that is very social. (to its own kind) They live in close family groups and hunt together as a pack. (similar to the grey wolf) They run down their prey normally small to medium antelope. One pair mates and has up to a dozen pups. These pups are taken care of by the entire group. The adults will bring back and regurgitate food for the pups. The markings of each animal are unique, much like finger prints. You need to look close though. One thing that is constant though, is the tip of the tail will be white. This animal is endangered and to see them is a real treat. Most of these photos were taken in Sabi Sandsand the Kruger Park in South Africa. I've included a large collection of photos to give you an idea of the interaction between these animals. The largest pack that we photographed in March of 2012 had 15 members.

  • From this point on, the photos were taken in Sabie Sands Reserve. The reserve is contiguious to Kruger, but not part of the park. There are no fences between the park and reserve, so the animals can move freely back and forth. We were staying at the Elephant Plains Lodge when taking these photos.
