Otter Pups

In early June the park (YNP) had experienced a long bout of rain. As a result, all of the rivers including the creeks that come together to form the Lamar river at the confluence were rising. An adult otter made 4 trips, as we watched, to move her pups to safer ground. These are some of the photos of that activity.

Now they're moving across the gravel.

  • First she enters the rocks right by the road at the confluence, entering her den.
  • She exits the den pup in mouth, and begins the swil across the river.
  • She is now well on her way across the river.
  • She is now nearing the far bank. She has drifted about 20 yards or so downstream making the crossing.
  • She has just about made it. The pups head is still above water.
  • She is now on land moving to the new den site. On land she drops the pup several times. I assume she held on better in the water. This has to hurt.

  • This is a cropped close up of the previous shot. Looks like she has the pups entire nexk in her jaws.
  • Now she is moving into the deadfalls. Note the open eye of the pup. Bet he can't wait for this to end.
