Coyote

The coyote is an mammal and omnivore who is very adaptable with respect to diet and environment. This adaptability has led to the migraton of the species from the open plains to almost the entire country. They have even adapted to the point where they occupy some of our cities, such as Los Angeles. It is estimated that this species numbers are at an all time high. Coyote vary from 20 to 50 lbs, depending on range. Those along the east coast tend to be the largest. He can reach speeds up to 40 miles an hour making him difficult to catch. They form strong family groups, with the male and female mating for life. The female dens up in the spring after a 60 to 63 day gestation period, when she will have 3 to 12 offspring the largest know litter being 19, most of whom will not reach maturity. Coyote can cross breed with wolves and dogs. When they breed with a dog the offspring is refered to as a coydog. Some speculate that the larger strains of coyote cross bred with Canadian wolves. My own experence, is that it is more likely that a wolf will kill a coyote rather then mate with it, but who knows. On our last trip to YNP we noticed an increase in coyote sightings, this may have been due to the significant drop in the Yellowstone wolf population. All this being said we hope you enjoy the photos of this wiley predator.

  • This photo of a handsome coyote was taken in the lamar valley by Sherry. Note the eyes.
  • Always watch your six.
  • Not sure what he is looking at.
  • Crop of the previous photo
  • I just like this one.
  • This guy was watching the road on the other side of soda butte creek as we drove by. From the road it looked like he was in a tree, unfortunately not true (could have made a fortune with a tree climbing coyote), but it was still a nice shot.
  • Getting ready for the hunt. A significant part of every day is spent hunting. Adults will bring mice and other small prey back to the den for the pups to learn this necessary skill.
  • Coyote have excellent senses of smell and hearing, this individual was walking and hunting on the side of the road in the Lamar valley when he either smelled or heard something under the snow. He then launched himself into the air.
  • In flight he continues to stay concentrated on the target.
  • Nearing the target.
  • He must be down a foot into the snow.
  • Lunch is served. While he was successful this time, more often then not the prey gets away.
  • Note the sharp, if not large teeth.
  • Say AH.
  • full view
  • This sequence was not successful. Maybe because he started in deep snow.
  • He's up
  • Airborne.
  • What it looks like from the front.
  • This photo and the next three will be moved to the unusual but not good folder shortly. What you have here is a bison in the rock cleft that has been killed by the silver wolf pack. The scavengers are gathering. Note the coyote on the rock, an eagle behind on the small rock and raven everywhere.
