Caracal

The Caracal, often called the desert lynx is widespread throught Africa and parts of Asia. Having said this, the animal picured in this gallery is the only one we have ever been able to photograph or indeed see. The name Caracal comes from the Turkish "Kara Kulak" Black Ear. The animal has a slender build with long legs, and is able to leap almost seven feet from a standing start. (useful in catching birds) Their diet consists mostly of birds, Hare, and mice, but they can and do kill smaller antalope. They are able to go long periods without water, obtaining moisture from their prey. They mate year round, with a gestation period of 69 to 81 days which results in litters of from one to six kittens. Kittens stay with their mother for approximately one year. The black tufts on the ears are distinctive. The males are from 30 to 42 inches long weighing in at 18 to 44 lbs. Females are smaller, 27 to 40 inches long and weigh from 15 to 35 lbs. Caracal are normally solitary but have been seen in pairs.

  • Close up of a Caracal in the Kagalagadi Trans frontier park in South Africa. An interesting fact, while the cat is in South Africa, our vehicle was in Botswana. If you travel north from Twee Rivieren you go in and out of these two countries several times, before you get to Nossob.
