African Lions

The lion is the largest African predator, with males weighing over 500 pounds. Females are in the 350 pound range. Only the male is maned. The lion is the most social of cats with prides ranging from 3 to 30 individuals, normally with a dominant male and female. The dominant male will drive away his male offspring as they grow and he perceives them as a threat. Lions tend to be active at night, mainly near sunrise and sunset. All of the lions in this section were photographed in southern Africa in the Kruger Park South Africa, the Sabie Sands Reserve South Africa, the Etosha Park Namibia and the Kalahari park which straddles the South African and Botswanan border.

  • Mom called and 4 cubs appeared out of the bush.
  • These two cubs were all alone for the 45 minutes that we photographed them. Location was between Lower Sabie and Satara.
  • Termite mound makes a good lookout.
  • Staring intently but there was nothing that we could see
  • Young male (part of a group of 4) - the others being female who made a kill on an impala on the banks of the Lower Sabie River near Skukuza.
  • Two female lions - looks like they are doing a dance step
  • They made it across and quickly disappeared into the reeds. The distance from the camera is approximately 1/2 mile.
  • Looks like he could use a dentist.

  • He is starting to move out for the night hunt.
  • While he may be one of the bad boys, he is truly a regal animal.
  • Taken in the Nkorho game preserve, this male is one of a pride of 5 males which prey on everything, including attacking other lions who roam into their territory. Sherry and I refer to them as "The Bad Boys of Nkorho". By the way, he is only yawning - at least that's what we told ourselves, as we are only about 50 feet away.
