Cape Buffalo
The cape buffalo is a large bovid with males reaching about 1750 lbs and females only slightly smaller at about 1550. This animal is an aggressive creature that will attack with minimal provocation, the most dangerous being the older bulls who have left the herd. There are stories about the cape buffalo setting up ambushes for hunters. While there may be some exaggeration in these stories, a wounded animal is not to be under estimated. That being said, we have (in a vehicle) sat in the middle of a herd for extended periods and were totally ignored. I would not though try it on foot. On our last trip we saw a cape that was brought down by lions at about 5:00 in the afternoon. The next morning there was little left. So while being very capable of taking care of themselves, they still provide food for the lions.
