Brown Bear (Grizzly)

The photos in this gallery were taken in Yellowstone, Grand Teton, southern Montana and Alaska. In Alaska the browns were shot in Katmi, Denalli and in the Chugach National Forest in the Skilak Reserve.

  • Young grizzly cub above the road going over dunraven pass.
  • This photo and the next several of a young female grizzly and an old male were taken just east of calcite springs.

  • This photo shows an interesting behavior. The near bear is a small female part of a mating pair. The far bear is a large black bear boar. They were within 50 feet of each other without any issue. Now the large Grizzzly boar was another 50 yards away sleeping. Were he awake who knows what might have happened. The reason for the poor photo was that I was moving backwards rapidly at the request of the ranger and out of common sense. Hope you enjoy this interesting shot.
  • Well the big guy has finished his nap
  • This is a shot mear calcite springs of the male from the matting pair that we photographed first in the snow and only about 4 hours later the snow was gone and the bun was bright. As they say in Yellowstone if you don't like the wheather wait a bit.
  • Another shot of the female
  • Still trying to catch up with the female who moved off a little while he was napping. This bear has a problem with one of his legs and holds it up as he moves. He still moves pretty fast.
  • I cropped and belew up this photo to give you a bettter view of the hump and the claws. I would deffinately not get in his way.
  • Well they have gotten back together. Although she dosen't look all that interested. The photo was taken just above the road near calcite springs.

  • A picture of the two a little closer but still in the snow. By the way these photos were taken almost directly across fron the Roosevelt ranger station.
  • Female Grizzly side view. She is really a small animal and I would think that this is the first time she is matting.
