African Wild Cat

The African wild cat is similar in size to a large domestic cat, and in fact can and does breed with feral cats. This inbreeding is having a negative effect on the wild cats as they often fall to sickness caused by this cross breeding. The wild cat is distinguished by stripes on the leg and a pink tint to the back of the ears. In our 4 trips to Africa, this is the first one we have seen and consider ourselves lucky to have been able to photograph it. The African wild cat is a nocturnal hunter with a weight of up to 14 lbs. The gestation period is approximately 60 days and up to six kittens are produced, three being the average. The cat ranges all over Africa and color goes from leight yellow to grey, depending on range. The latest photos were taken shortly after dawn in kruger. Teh nightime photos were taken in Sabie Sands.
