irishbob  > Wildlife > Bears > Black Bear
The photos in this gallery were taken in Yellowstone, Grand Teton, southern Montana and Redoubt Bay Alaska. Yes that's where the volcano is making noise. It wasn't when we were there. This gallery is composed of the american black bear. Unlike the brown bear the black bear can still be found in most states. The brown which once could be found coast to coast is now only seen in Alaska, Idaho, Wyoming and Montanna and only a portion of the three in the lower 48. If you look at the California flag you will see a Grizzly prominently displayed, but it's been a long time since any roamed wild in that state.

irishbob > This large black bear is the one who just swam across the blacktail lake. After consuming his duck, He walked directly at us, to cross the road. Needless to say we got quickly out of his way. This shot is with a 600mm lens with a 1.4 extender. I strongly suggest that you give bears like this some room and obay the park rules.

For those of you who have not yet had the opportunity to visit Yellowstone it gets its name from an island of vegitation that floats several feet offshore. For the past several years sand hill cranes have had a nest on the island. If you're there in early june you may get ot see the eggs hatch.
